The Obama Administration and Brain Research
With all of the changes in Health Care under the Obama administration some people were concerned about how medical research would be affected since it was one of the many things under consideration for government spending cuts. This article talks about one of the research projects that is planned to be supported by President Obama's administration. Some see this project as controversial. Others are encouraged by it. Do you think this is a promising project? How do you think this project will affect the economy? What are your opinions on the topic of this project as opposed to other potential projects in areas related to cancer or other diseases? Are you excited about this project?

I personally am very excited by the idea of creating a map of human brain activity. This would not only help cure many mental and neurological illnesses, but it would also help us better how the brain works, something we still don't completely understand. My one slight issue here is wether or not it is the governments place to do this research. I personally think that a private corporation should be funding this research. I think the research would be far more efficient this way.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that a private corporation should be doing this research. It would affect the economy in a much more positive way than by having the government fund it. Plus this is just another spending cost for the government with their already increasing national debt.
ReplyDeleteI think this research is very interesting and beneficial. What I don't like: "The details are not final, and it is not clear how much federal money would be proposed or approved for the project in a time of fiscal constraint or how far the research would be able to get without significant federal financing." Is this really BEST place to put our money? Some may say yes, and I do see the benefits, but I don't know. $3 billion over ten years! That's a lot. But, I think this is so much more necessary than some of the absurd things our government spends/wastes money on.
ReplyDeleteI think the project is a good idea and may have some good effect on the economy. Well mostly it will be helpful for this in the science industry and interested in pursuing research career. Advancing human understanding of the brain is something i wanna see and will support to the fullest. Great idea Mr Obama!
ReplyDeleteI think the project is a great idea. As Obama says, “Every dollar we invested to map the human genome returned $140 to our economy — every dollar." Even if this research is not as beneficial to the economy, this is money well spent.
ReplyDeleteA map of the brain would be very beneficial as we don't completely understand how it exactly works. We never may, but at least this would give us a better idea of how it functions. It could also help to cure major diseases, such as tumors and cancer, which would be awesome! I think this is more beneficial to our economy as it will actually help the domestic population. It makes more sense to spend our money on something like this than a war we have no business being in.
ReplyDelete"Now is not the time to gut these job-creating investments in science and innovation.” I think this could be have a positive impact. Like other students have stated... a return to the economy and an advance in knowledge of the brain could only help us right? I think Obama and the government is starting to put our tax dollars to the right programs... and I hope to see more of this in the future.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a promising project because "if successful, could provide a lift for the economy and we will probably get a lot more bang for the buck.” This project will be beneficial in the long run, however, it is very expensive. The government are trying to cut spending so I wonder whether the Republicans will accept this president’s budget proposal next month.
ReplyDeleteI agree with other people, it is indeed a good idea to invest in science and technology. It won't produce immediate results but investment in science and technology rarely brings a bad return on investment in the future. Given the financial constraints is it a good time to make such investment? Personally I would say yes, but making spending cuts in any area is extremely tough. Hence, I won't be surprised if some people say it isn't the right time to make such investment.
