It Takes a B.A. to Find a Job as a File Clerk

This article definitely relates to all of us as we are all in college trying to earn our degrees. I found it quite shocking that all of the people in the article including the runner, file clerk, and paralegal all had college degrees for positions that don't normally require them. With the way the economy is going do you think a college degree is really the new high school degree? Are you nervous about finding a good job once you get out of college? Would you be willing to accept a lower position like the people in this article until you could work your way up? Do you think this will change in future years or do you think it will become more and more difficult to find a good job once graduating from college?

  1. I do think that in the future it will be harder and harder to find jobs right out of college. Companies want the most intelligent people to work at their company, and right now to show an above average level of intelligence is a college degree in the companies minds.

  2. Every new generation is prioritizing a college degree more than before. So I think the number of college graduates will grow more in the future. When a college graduates applies for a job which is equivalent to their skill and educational level and get rejected, they will go for other option. When a employer has a chance to hire someone with high level of skills for a certain position he will do it and such situation are going to grow more in the future. Hence, it will get harder to find the jobs in a desired position after graduating right out of college.

  3. This is some scary stuff! I love liberal arts education but it seems like we gonna be doing these kind of jobs until we move up the chain or get more specialized skills. I would be willing to accept a job in my field as long as there a guarantee that i can move up.

  4. Megan McArdle has some good posts relating to this article. Check out the other two posts she made after the one I linked to.

College is valuable for a variety of reasons, but at least some of it is about signaling to employers that you have the patience and discipline to pass some classes and sit through some lectures.

  5. I feel like you always have to start somewhere. Most people start from the bottom and work their way up to the top. If thats what it takes to be successful, I'm all for it. Doing a job where you can move up in the chain of command is always a good thing. The people at the top had to of started at the bottom. I honestly don't know what to expect when I graduate.

  6. The increasing rates of college graduate mean that there is going to be more competition in the past but I also have seen some studies especially for women about the increasing work load of high up employees. The increasing work load of high level employees could be mitigated with an increase in mid-level to entry level positions that may supplement the higher work loads of senior employees. In this depressed economy I am skeptical of the likeliness of this transition.

  7. I have to agree that with this tight job market and huge competition, it is harder and harder to get a job now. It will take time for students graduating from college to get a dream job. As long as students keep learning and showing their skills to employers, they will move to the top.
