This article talks about how Barnes and Noble is losing profit with the Nook and it's reading tablets/online store. Do you think that the company will "go away" like Borders did? Or are you hoping the store will stay in business? What are your thoughts on book stores and their importance?
I firmly believe that bookstores are slowly on their way out. When the world's largest bookstore company, "Borders" fell out of operation rapidly over the course of a few years--I would not recommend anyone put their future stock in brick-and-mortar storefronts.
ReplyDeleteThe tablet/online store is the only way to invest in bookstores for the future. Amazon.com, and the tablet have been the new pioneers of book sales. Much like Netflix took over Blockbuster's functions.
Americans aren't done reading entirely. I wouldn't sell all of my stock in nook/online sales just yet. But I would certainly dissuade anyone from any Borders-esque investing. 'Barnes and Noble' is included in this.
I really hope that Barnes and Noble doesn't go away, but things aren't looking good. I was really bummed when Borders went under, I don't know if I can go through this again. I really do hope the store stays in business. I personally don't like reading from tablets. I am a stickler for turning the pages when it comes to reading, both for pleasure and school. I really hope that at least one book store chain stays in business so when I become an old fart and start reading more I have somewhere to go.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrew, I think that bookstores are on their way out. I really enjoyed the analogy with Blockbuster and Netflix. A similar one is Amazon and Best Buy. Best Buy makes a good majority of their profit on cords, contrary to popular belief. Amazon can sell the same cord for $5 that Best Buy sells for $30. This competition is great for consumers as we can buy the cord at the cheaper price. Unfortunately, this kind of business hurts the "physical" stores such as Blockbuster, Best Buy, and now Barnes and Noble.
ReplyDeleteI, for one, was very surprised to see that the Nook has not been performing as well as projected. I thought the device may save Barnes and Noble, and was a great move by the company to keep up with the changing consumer preference. Hopefully, the company finds a way to turn this around, and does not have to close all of the stores it currently plans to.
ReplyDeleteI also am surprised Nook has not done as well as expected. As far as book stores go... I believe they are important! Realistically? I think that they will start to go out of business like Borders. Considering that because of online options now, investing in these companies and chains is idiotic. Maybe if Barnes and Noble were to invest their money on the online market, i.e. amazon, they could join the new market instead of dropping out of it completely. I wouldn't expect them to discontinue soon, but I do not see high hopes for them in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhen Nook has to compete against Ipad and Samsung Galaxy tablet, it is not surprising that Nook is losing. "Buyers preferred Apple devices by a long mile but then went on to buy Samsung, Amazon and Google products before those of Barnes & Noble, according to market analysis by Forrester Research".However, I truly hope that the company will not go away like Borders. They can still be in business by focusing on their core strength like "content distribution".
ReplyDeleteI definitely believe bookstores are on their way out as well. People are more likely to read online now and are more into the technology than sitting down and reading an actual book. It's just like newspapers where a lot of people have switched to reading online instead of getting the hard copy. It will be sad to see them go out of business.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrew as well, things are not looking too good fro bookstores. It was a good try by barnes and noble to introduce the nook but amazon is getting big everyday. If the book stores are to stay they simply need to match the commercial innovations amazon made in the shopping.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible news for bookstores. With new technology like kindles and other tablets, people arent going to bookstores anymore and its putting bookstores out of business. I hope barnes and nobles recovers from this but i dont see that happening.
