Good Mooring: Houseboats

Here an interesting article on how the Dutch are working around the land problem in the country.
Its amazing what people can do, another instance of innovation. We are not bound by the traditional factor of production - LAND.
What do you think about living on water? Do you think its a sustainable thing and a good solution to land issues? Any implications for the water body these houses being built on?

  1. This is really cool. I've never heard anything like this really (I gathered the most from the slideshow). My roommate who studied abroad last year said he's seen these. Like Gift said, more innovation. AND, the article notes that it is about the same price comparably to one on land. I don't fully get why they say the boat housing market is in slump then they say many people dream of living in a house boat.

  2. Good observation! Innovation doesn't always require "inventing" something, it's often just applying existing technology in a different way. Here in the U.S, we could get more productivity out of our land by being willing to build taller and more densely. Regulations in cities like New York and Washington like parking requirements and building height limits cause the high real estate and rental prices we see in cities. Just removing those restrictions would make living much more affordable, and all the "innovation" it requires is removing some words from a page!

  3. This is a really cool innovation but I do think it needs to have limitations. Things like plumbing and trash needs to be taken care of properly and should in no way impact the rivers and lakes. Other wise this will destroy our environment and future resources.

  4. Seeing this reminds me of the manmade islands in Dubai. I know that these houseboats are a little bit more of a necessity than for luxury but it is the same concept; innovation. If ever our world becomes too populated both of these innovations show that the people of the world will find alternative places to live. In both of these cases there is a relatively small market of buyers but I believe as living in large cities continues to become more expensive more people will resort to buying things such as house boats.
