This article talks more about the debt ceiling that is a hot topic right now. Republicans have "agreed to postpone this particular piece of the fiscal confrontation, but only until May. The decision to turn the debt ceiling into a confrontation is a big mistake for the Republicans and extending the indecision is likely to prolong the agony of uncertainty and have damaging economic consequences for the country."
I feel like this whole debt ceiling issue is a pressure cooker. Republicans keep putting it off and putting it off, and each time they do this I feel like the problem only gets worse. I think that when they finally face the issue and do something to fix it, the consequences will be more severe than if they had figured this out months ago. What do you guys think?

ReplyDeleteI think if it does nothing else...it will certainly continue to affect consumer and investor sentiments in the economy. An arguing political body that decides our economic FUTURE, indecisive and chalked full of partisan ideologies-- cannot promote a great deal of hope for our consumers or investors. However, the economic news aside from this debt debacle has been pretty positive for the US. We are thought to be slowly climbing our way out of this recession-dug trough. The main thing this continuous fight in Washington does, is unnerve consumers/investors from putting more money into the overall GDP pool.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrew. They need to figure this out quick. This shouldn't be a fight. Do what is best for the economy. We want more money to circulate and our economy to start flowing again.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author on this one. Delaying decisions will not help, so I wonder what their motive is to keep doing that. I like his comparison to the bathtub, that was helpful. "The threat lies between some form of default and some other form of unprecedented disruption to public finances. Expect uncertainty — perhaps at the level of August 2011, perhaps even higher." I'm curious to see if this is the actual result.
ReplyDeleteFor me it is all so frustrating that they can't make a decision already, time is running out and it's worrying investors and even more the American population. They're really pushing a limit and I think you're right in calling it a pressure cooker. It's only a matter of time till the steam blows
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand I would like congress to focus on one subject and just hammer out the policy but on the other I also believe a decision should be made one way or the other. This way people will be able to calculate the risk and understand how the economy will be changing.
